Celebrating Wisdom and Action: Global Knights Foundation Marks UNIDOP 2025 in Abuja

On October 1, 2025, the Global Knights Foundation (GKF) proudly joined the global community to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) under the inspiring theme, "Older Persons Driving Local and Global Actions: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights." In a vibrant convergence of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary and UNIDOP, we stirred the heart of Abuja with a powerful event that united generations—from spirited Gen Z voices to Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. It was a day filled with dialogue, laughter, real-talk solutions, and soul-soothing music, all dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of older persons to our society.

A Personal Story Sparks Urgent Dialogue

Our Executive Director, Ngozi John-Uyah, set the tone with a deeply personal and poignant story. She shared her experience of being abruptly removed from the Integrated Public Service Payment System (IPPIS) and the National Health Insurance System on her 60th birthday—the mandatory retirement age for Nigerian public servants. After over three decades of dedicated service, she faced the harsh reality that confronts countless retirees - navigating life without remuneration while awaiting retirement benefits, which can take up to two years or more to process. When these benefits finally arrive, they often amount to a mere one-fifth of their exit package, woefully inadequate to cover basic needs like daily essentials, healthcare, and the skyrocketing cost of living.
Her story struck a chord, prompting a question that echoed through the gathering: Why isn’t Nigeria doing more to honor and provide for those who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation? This set the stage for a day of reflection, inspiration, and a call for systemic change. Igniting Change Through Wisdom and Urgency

The heart of the event was a stirring keynote address by Dr. Musa Bawa, a trailblazing wellness expert, psychologist, and mind coach. Dr. Bawa shared transformative insights on aging well, emphasizing the power of a positive mindset, relentless physical and mental activity, and deep gratitude, even in life’s toughest moments. His advice was clear: to age gracefully, we must stay active, embrace optimism, and connect with others. He urged everyone to seek out an older person to spend time with, reminding us that “a community without elders is like a barren river, dry and lifeless.” His words ignited a sense of urgency to cherish and learn from our seniors.

Raw Truths and Bold Solutions

The panel discussion, masterfully moderated by award-winning investigative journalist Tajudeen Suleiman, brought together accomplished voices to tackle the realities of aging.

The panel dove fearlessly into the challenges older persons face: loneliness, financial hardship, and declining health. They highlighted critical policy gaps and called for urgent reforms, including comprehensive retirement blueprints focused on housing, transportation, and healthcare.

They also encouraged older persons to pursue untapped dreams and advocated for stronger intergenerational ties to foster healing and unity. Their message was clear: we must build systems that empower seniors to thrive, not just survive.

Our Event Luminaries

Intergenerational Connections That Heal

The event culminated in an emotional “Intergenerational Connect” session, where stories bridged ages and warmed hearts. Alhaji Garba Bawa, 84, Chairman of ABG Group, shared his secrets to longevity: honesty, integrity, compassion, empathy, and steadfastness.

Fred Ohwahwa championed global travel for soul-reviving breaks, while Drs. Hajara Njidda Amoni and Umma Umar Mohammed inspired attendees to explore new hobbies and interests. Comrade Akpausoh encouraged older persons to venture into entrepreneurship, proving it’s never too late to start anew.

The Big Takeaway: A Call to Action

“We should thank God. One of the courses I teach is PMA, Positive Mental Attitude. Regardless of all the hula and all the wahala, we should be thankful and happy that we are alive.
That we even climbed this flight of stairs to get here today shows that we are somewhat healthy. We thank God for that. Happy Independence Anniversary. There is a common African saying, that a village or town without an elder is like a well without water. Do you agree? Yes. More often than not, we wait until the elders are gone, and then we cry our hearts out. Then we tend to remember some of the things that we wish we would have told them. If we don’t take away anything from this meeting today, is the fact that at least you will take one actually good step. Even if it is looking through your phone, scrolling through it, call that one elderly person, older person, older than your good self, it doesn’t matter how old you are. I know here we say the age is 60, but I’m going to say that some are even aspiring for 67.”
